Making tayammum for the ghusl
Question: In the dormitory, we are supplied with hot water at certain times. When there is no hot water, we do not have the chance to make a ghusl with cold water, either, because the bathrooms are locked. Since we do not have any other opportunities, can we perform namâz making a tayammum [rubbing one’s hands and face with one’s hands dusted with clean soil]?
ANSWER
It is not an excuse to be unable to find water in a city. You can perform a ghusl in the restroom. Likewise, you can perform it in the restroom with the spring water you bought. It is not an excuse for making a tayammum. If one cannot find any water, only then it is permissible to make a tayammum.
A person who is unable to perform a ghusl
Question: The place I have been in is ruled with firm discipline. The bathroom is not opened until the sun rises, and there is no other place where to perform a ghusl. Is it permissible to perform namâz by making a tayammum?
ANSWER
If one does not have any opportunities to perform the namâz even in a restroom, then one can perform it by making a tayammum. But when one takes a ghusl, one makes iâda [performing the namâz for the second time before its time is over] of that namâz.
A person who could not find a place to perform the ghusl
Question: If a woman who has gotten out of the state of menstruation during a journey could not find a place to perform the ghusl, what should she do?
ANSWER
First she should look out for all the possibilities to perform the ghusl. She goes to a public bath for women if there is; she explains the situation to a suitable person. If she is still unable to find a place, she can delay the ghusl on the condition that she has the opportunity to combine two namâzes [making jam’]. If it does not work as well, she makes a tayammum instead of the ghusl, and she performs an ablution with water. If people cannot find a place to perform a ghusl during journeys or when they are on buses, they can make a tayammum during the stopover.
